The following policy regarding cell phones and electronic devices is in accordance with Chancellor’s Regulation A-413 Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices in Schools.
All P.S. 62 classrooms will be cell-phone-free zones.
This means that mobile phones can be brought to school but must remain off or silent and completely out of view for the whole school day. This year, we partnered with Yonder, and students will store their cell phones in Yonder pouches throughout the entire day. (Please see the attached document for more information). This will help students stay more present and engaged in their learning.
If a child does not follow this rule, they will first receive a warning from their teacher or a staff member. Any phone in view and on-site after the initial warning will be confiscated, and a parent/guardian phone call will be made. Once confiscated, the phone will be logged and securely held until the end of the school day, at which point the student can collect it.
In the event that any child is recording/taking photos or texting and/or using social media during the school day, the phone will be immediately confiscated. A parent/guardian will be called to pick up the phone from the principal. Additionally, personal devices such as iPads, smartwatches, and any other communication devices are not allowed in the school building. The school has provided DOE iPads and/or laptops for each student. Personal iPads and laptops do not have DOE protections that block potentially harmful content; therefore, they should not be brought to the building.
We understand that emergencies happen, and you may need to get in contact with your child. Please feel free to call the school. We will make sure that your message and/or your child is immediately available for you to speak with.
